Event Description

Connecticut’s largest organic conference will be held on Saturday, March 5th, 2011 from 8:30 to 4:45 pm at Manchester Community College, sponsored by CT NOFA and the college.

The state’s premier organic education event features keynote speaker Shannon Hayes, PhD, a third generation family farmer.  Ms. Hayes is the celebrated author of three books The Grassfed Gourmet, The Farmer and the Grill, and Radical Homemakers.  Shannon writes for numerous national publications including the NY Times, The Boston Review, The Atlantic and many international newspapers.  Shannon writes of her attempts to live a life of personal accountability, while depicting the ecological side of today’s homemaking.

This year’s conference will feature a beginning farmer track of workshops, and also two tracks on winter food, one for farmers and another for consumers.  All told there will be over thirty organic workshops for gardeners, cooks, farmers and land care professionals including classes on cheese making, wine and mead making, keeping urban chickens, canning food,  deer fencing, raising nut crops, co-housing trends, and much more.  For those interested in cooking local organic food there will be in-kitchen demonstrations. Local vendors and exhibits, focusing on food, gardening, farming, sustainable lifestyles and much more, will enrich the day’s experience.  Lunch will be the ever-famous NOFA Potluck overseen by Chef John Turenne of Sustainable Food Systems.

CT NOFA (The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut) has promoted local organic agriculture through education and advocacy since 1982.  Its members are a growing community of farmers, gardeners, land care professionals, businesses and consumers.  The conference is open to everyone, with scholarships available to new and beginning farmers. Visit www.ctnofa.org for more information.
