Come meet new friends, learn to kayak (or practice your skills) and enjoy the delicious bounty of summer at a free event hosted jointly by Slow Food NYC and the Downtown Boathouse.
The day begins on the river with Kevin Hein, expert kayaker and the leader of the Pier 40 Free Kayaking Meetup group, who will tell us about the river and explain basic strokes and techniques. For those who already know their way around an ocean kayak, it's an opportunity to get out on the water, show off your skills and meet new people who share your love of kayaking and eating well.
You're welcome to stay out on the water as long as you like, but around 12:30 we'll begin to migrate to the Hudson River Park and spread out a Celebration of Summer potluck picnic. Bring something to share that showcases the deliciousness of New York-area food in the ripe month of August. There'll be a place to keep your culinary contribution while we kayak -- including a refrigerator if you need it. The boathouse also has a microwave and a small electric grill that we can use if you'd like to bring something that needs to be cooked or warmed.
This is a very laid back event, so come by Pier 40 (at West Houston) any time after 10; by 11 to kayak with Kevin. If you'd just like to join us for the picnic, come to the base of Pier 40 at 12:30 with something tasty to share, and perhaps a blanket or a park chair if you'd like one.
This event is free and open to all, but please RSVP here:
so that we can know how many to prepare to celebrate summer with.
