Celebrate the culture of agriculture & share skills (Growing! Cooking! Eating!)

Last Christmas, we got my dad (who loves a good root beer float) his very own Soda Stream - a little gizmo that carbonates his beverages at home with CO2 cartridges.

It came with a bunch of pre-made (processed) syrups, which do not taste very good at all. I'm allergic to aspartame (so no chemical diet drinks for me), and I hate sugary soft-drinks, so I usually stick to seltzers that I flavor or sweeten naturally. But, a homemade syrup would be a great alternative to soda syrup!

This year, I wanted to make a few syrups for him...Any advice? There's a great HOMEGROWN blog post on lacto-fermented sodas. Can I use these syrups with the carbonation whiz-bang?
