This is a link to a North Carolina bill that proposes that 10% of food used in schools, military bases, prisons, etc. come from locally grown and sustainable operations. I have mixed thoughts about this. On the surface, it promotes small and local farmers. However, it is forcing the debate of the government's role in how food is labeled 'local' or 'sustainable.' The USDA and federal government (see previous discussion on this) are currently reviewing the impacts and operations of local growers to evaluate food safety, and to put regulations in place for small growers.
I welcome thoughts on this bill. Looks like the can of worms is being opened here.
See the group 'Food Preservation' for tips and pointers on how to can worms.
