Celebrate the culture of agriculture & share skills (Growing! Cooking! Eating!)

AMBER WAVES (HELLO, THAT IS!) This week we caught up with new HOMEGROWN member Amber, a mom and freshly minted homesteader in North Carolina. As soon as we came across her profile, we couldn’t resist her enthusiasm: “I’m too excited! I love farm life!” Turns out Amber’s awesome spirit infuses pretty much everything she does, from chickens to garden planning to kid rearing. Get inspired by her can-do attitude below then leave a note and say hello!

What is Meet Your Neighbors? We can spend a fair amount of time tending our online gardens, but it’s easy to forget there’s a real person behind every quiche recipe, chicken inquiry, and hoophouse design here on HOMEGROWN. Well, nuts to that! MYN gives us a chance to meet over the back fence and shake hands.

Good morning, Amber! You’re chatting with us from North Carolina, right? What part of the state are you in? And what’s the weather like where you are today?

Hi! Yes, I live in North Carolina, I live in the western part, in Waynesville. And it is cooold outside today! We still have quite a bit of snow left outside from our little winter blast on Tuesday! But it sure is beautiful :)

Sounds very pretty! Now, a little birdie told us you’ve recently moved onto some new property. Can you tell us more about your land and how you ended up there?

Well, my husband and I were living in Asheville, and we had been looking for a house to buy for a while. We found our sweet home on a real estate website, went to look at it, and fell in love! It was built in 1945, 4 bd/2 bth on 7/10 of an acre, with an adorable little chicken coop already built on it! Now that we have a bit of our own land, we can't wait to start our very own tiny farm!

Congratulations! A new home—and some land! So many possibilities! What are you guys thinking/dreaming/hoping/planning to do with it? And tell us a little about what you've done so far—even if that's just settling in and unpacking a couple of boxes (which is plenty!).

So far, we have just settled in and are trying to "weather" this harsh winter lol. Sorry for the pun. But really, we're just staking out where to put our garden, what veggies go where, and we are reading "Raising Chickens For Dummies" , haha,  trying to learn as much as we can before spring comes. We want to start small, as neither of us has any real farming experience. We're wanting to start with 2 laying hens, fresh eggs sound wonderful! I'll be the one gardening, and I want to start with some hardier plants, and really just try not to kill them! But my dream is to have a big 'ol pumpkin patch! I love pumpkins!

Sounds like a great plan—and so smart to get started by reading and learning and planning. And as for chickens, you’ll find lots of folks here on HOMEGROWN who are happy to share advice! Speaking of chickens, you’ve also got several cats and a dog, and a wee one, too, right? Did having a child play into your decision to find some land?

Well, we've always wanted some land, but of course we realized we needed a big yard for our son Milo (2 1/2 yo) to grow and play in. Every child needs a big yard!  We also have 5 (!) cats, Vester, Reeses, Harry, Boo and Elsie, and Casey is out 16 year old Pomeranian. And some fish :) So we can't wait to add some chickens to the mix, it ought to be pretty interesting. I joined a group on here, and have definitely learned some invaluable tips on chickens! My husband and I love reading about everyone's experiences, and we are loving this wonderful community! And really, cannot wait to put my own pictures up of a burgeoning garden!

Pictures of your soon-to-be garden: YES, PLEASE! One more question and then we'll let you get back to Milo and the brood: Even as small as he is, are there maybe one or two lessons you're hoping Milo will learn this year about your land or your garden? And thanks so, so much for taking the time to chat this morning, Amber. We're so thrilled to have you as part of the HOMEGROWN flock and can't wait to learn from you!

We really hope he sees the fun in gardening, how you KNOW what your food is made of, and that healthy is DELICIOUS! That's a lesson we all are very excited to learn :) Thank you so much for this wonderful community, and I'll be posting my pics in no time! Have a great day, and thanks again!
