Profile Information

Fill in the blank:
CSA-loving constant gardener
A bit about me:
I like to cook, I like to eat, and life is too short to eat tasteless food that has traveled a distance from where it's grown to where I live.
I think it would be great if everyone who signed up for a CSA knew what to do with their food, so that they would enjoy the experience and keep coming back for more. Sadly, I hear a lot of folks overwhelmed with greens in the early summer and fall, and that experience discourages them from continuing. I want to help with that.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Sautéed beet greens and spring onions (from Patchwork Gardens CSA) topped with a sunny side up egg (from Keener Walnut Grove Farm's RV-living chickens). Recipe here: http://www.farmfreshfeasts.com/2013/06/sauteed-beet-greens-and-spri...
Currently reading:
A trashy romance novel by Susan Mallery. Gotta problem with escapist literature?
Currently listening to:
Whatever my teens play next. it really varies, from show tunes to Centipede to British Wind Band Classics to One Direction, and it drives me insane.
My latest DIY project:
I am replacing the screen door on the porch with one of those screen drape thingies, so that the dog doesn't keep locking himself out when he bangs the door open to chase after the squirrels in the garden.
How did you find HOMEGROWN.org?
CSAmom.com's blog referenced the 'end of the meat CSA' blog post and I came and poked around.
Web site I recommend:

Green Tomatoes: Do Something With Them!

It pains me to see folks piling their spent tomato plants, laden with green tomatoes, at the curb for yard waste pick up. I'm glad to participate in this round up of 65 Recipes for Using and Preserving Green Tomatoes over on…

Producers! Consumers! Have you heard of Barn2Door? Want to try it out?

Disclosure: the folks at Barn2Door sent me a box of jujube fruits direct from Fairview Orchards in exchange for writing a post using the fruit and spreading the word about B2D. I've already fulfilled that obligation, and then some. This post is not part of that, it's just…

When I don't eat local grown on purpose.

I've spent the last 2 Saturdays going around to my favorite farmer's markets to amass enough tomatillos to put up some salsa verde. The other key ingredient, though, is decidedly not local to Ohio.

It's the time of year when the smell of roasting chiles permeates the air when I walk down to the grocery store in my little town. For a few brief…

Murphy's Law of Canning

I firmly believe there's a Murphy's Law of Canning. You know Murphy's Law, right? Anything that can go wrong will go wrong? I believe that is statistically true over time.

[I had an ultrasound by an OB/Geneticist--yeah, not too many of those around, I'm…

Hi, Kirsten. Welcome to HOMEGROWN! My name is Jennifer, and I'm the flock tender here: site updater and tweaker, feeder and waterer of content. I’m so glad you found us! And I LOVE that you want to help folks get over the too-many-greens hurdle! I hope you’ll find plenty of projects and ideas here to spur you on, and I hope you’ll be game for sharing more of your own, too—more mouth-watering photos and recipes, please!—in our member blog, The Stew. Elsewhere on HOMEGROWN, you can always find the latest additions to the site at the top of the homepage, and if you’ve ever got questions, please don't hesitate to leave a comment on my profile page or shoot me a message. I hope you feel right at home!
