What kind of HOMEGROWN are you?
Earth Mama, Dirt Under My Fingernails City Slicker
A bit about me:
I am a student and birth doula living in Richmond, Virginia! I just moved into a house after a long stint of living in apartments, so I'm really looking forward to utilizing the space, especially the acre of land. I'm interested in growing my own foods, herbalism and herbal health, vegetarian/vegan food, DIY cleaning and beauty supplies, and making my own pet food. I am not actually an Earth Mama, but I'll be working with them and I want to learn about herbs and foods to help new mamas out!
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Black bean sweet potato stew with kale and avocado. Another favorite is garlic & rosemary roasted root veggies with eggplant parm over brown rice pasta and a side of greens.
Currently reading:
Crush by Richard Siken
Currently listening to:
My top eight on LastFM are Waxahatchee, The Tallest Man On Earth, Hop Along, Paul Baribeau, Devendra Banhart, Blink 182, Regina Spektor, and Sufjan Stevens.
My latest DIY project:
Making tinctures! I provide my clients with tinctures during their labor, birth, and postpartum periods, so I've been doing a lot of research with that. I am also in the early stages of making a bedframe & headboard from found wood.

Hi, Nora. Welcome to HOMEGROWN! My name is Jennifer, and I'm the flock tender here (site updater and tweaker, feeder and waterer of content), and I’m a big fan of your pal Shannon. She’s a superstar, and I’m so thrilled she’s introducing some of her friends to the site. I’m really glad you’re here!

I won’t pester you right away, but I’d love to talk you into guest-writing a HOMEGROWN 101 on your tinctures. That sounds like something HOMEGROWN types (me, included) would be especially interested in. And what an amazing job you have! Anything HOMEGROWN can do to help someone find resources who’s ushering small folks into the world would be an honor. We’ve got a fair amount of info on gardening and homemade beauty products—a lot of which it looks like you’ve already found, which is awesome—and we’ve also got some how-tos on DIY laundry detergent and dish soap, with more to come. And congrats on the house—and especially the extra space!

Anyway, I'll be in touch soon, but if you’ve ever got questions, please don't hesitate to leave a comment on my profile page or shoot me a message. I hope you feel right at home!

Hey, Nora. Hooray! So glad you're interested. I'm playing catch-up today after being away for the (lovely, long) weekend, but I'll check in with you a bit later this week to chat more about a tinctures 101. In the meantime, hope you had a fantastic weekend—and did I mention how glad I am you're here?
