What kind of HOMEGROWN are you?
100% Homegrown, Fill in the Blank
Fill in the blank:
Farmer Trapped in an Urban Setting
A bit about me:
I'm a farmer by heart, I just don't have my land. I work in landscape architecture in the SF Bay Area. I live on just a 1/4 acre but try to grow as much food as possible. I also raise chickens and goats and host bee hives. I always want to do more.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Anything that can be made out of food from my yard.
Currently reading:
The Resilient Gardener
Currently listening to:
Farming related podcasts.
My latest DIY project:
Currently painting the interior of my house. There are lots of items on my list including creating an edible landscape in the front yard, building a greenhouse, a shed, an additional chicken yard, 2 new veggie beds, plant more fruit trees.
How did you find HOMEGROWN.org?
It's been so long I don't remember.

Does Raising and Slaughtering Your Own Animals Make You Violent?

To me it almost seems like a dumb question because we do raise our own meat animals and we're not violent at all. In fact it makes us value life more. We always make sure an animal goes as quickly and painlessly as possible and then we thank it for the life it gave us to sustain our own and honor it when we eat it.

But I've recently been seeing the violence argument a lot. One woman, at a community workshop, standing next to my husband, who does most of our slaughtering, made…

A call to new and aspiring farmers

I started a post on this in the Aspiring Farmers Group but thought I'd bring it out here so more people can see it.

I'm writing a post for my blog about this new movement of young farmers and I wanted to get like minded people's reasons for their desire to be farmers.

Where does your desire come from?

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

What would your raise/grow?

Did you grow up around…
