The Greenhorns is a nonprofit organization by and for young farmers. Mission: to recruit, promote, and support America’s young farmers. The organization was founded in 2007 by Severine von Tscharner Fleming, farmer/activist, and Greenhorns’ current director. The organization’s primary focus was the production of a documentary film, “The Greenhorns.” Ms. Fleming’s film captures the valor and vision of a corps of young people from diverse backgrounds who are new entrants into sustainable farming. This film project quickly burgeoned into a young farmer network and an array of activities intent on sparking land-based action and a new, more robust farm culture in our communities. These projects include a resource-rich website and a popular blog, a weekly radio show, young farmer publications and other original educational resources, an interactive mapping database of the nation’s beginning farmers, a National Young Farmers Coalition, public education programming in agriculture with the USDA and Cornell University, and the organizing and hosting of many social and educational events for beginning farmers across the country.
