As anyone that works with children can tell you, there are days that you wonder.  Why in the world did I choose this profession?  In all my time observing children I can honestly say that I am reminded all the time about why I chose education but every once in a while there are those moments that can only be describe as a rewarding gift- a glimpse into the honesty of children that few people ever look close enough to see.  A moment that you wish you could capture, save and show. Here is…

There is no song- "School is in for fall"

Did anyone get my Alice Cooper reference?  School's out for summer  is a celebrated song but what about when school starts again?

Long days, hot sun, days at the beach, family vacations and staying up late oh my! That is what children look forward to with the words "summer vacation". Braver than you think.

Today I tried so hard to think back to my first day of school?  Do you remember yours?  Were you one of those children that had no trouble at all or were you sad?  Do you remember?  Did you miss your mom or want to go home?  Were you full of smiles or crying or somewhere in the middle?  Do you remember?  Do you remember the feeling of saying goodbye at the door or the school bus?  Do you remember?  I don't.

Where I work there is a terrific program in place for parents…

Too Cool for School

You work at a school that has no grades? You work at school that does not give homework?

You work at a school that does not give tests? You work at a school that does not give report cards?

From these questions you may think that we are not a school at all. Welcome to Progressive Education- its not just a place where children do whatever they want, it is not unstructured but it does allow for freedom. A concept more schools should embrace. There are no grades because I believe…

Hi, BugsMudB&S. Welcome to HOMEGROWN! My name is Jennifer, and I'm the flock tender here (site updater and tweaker, feeder and waterer of content). I’m so glad you found us—and I’m headed to Maine this weekend myself! I hope you’ll find plenty of projects and ideas here to spur you on, and I hope you’ll be game for sharing some of your own, too—maybe some kid-friendly projects connected to good food?—in our member blog, The Stew. (You are *of course* welcome to post a link only back to your personal blog, but you might get a few more eyeballs if you repost the entire post, then link back to your blog. But totally up to you! Just glad you're here!) Elsewhere on HOMEGROWN, you can always find the latest additions to the site at the top of the homepage, and if you’ve ever got questions, please don't hesitate to leave a comment on my profile page or shoot me a message. I hope you feel right at home!
