Marie, I have been doing some research this morning. In the book "Stocking up"copyright 1973 by Rodale Press,Inc. I found some information. They suggest using a honey syrup or water. These can be canned in the boiling water bath. I have not canned any apples so I am reading from the book. I hope this helps. I wish you were closer to me and we would have you using a pressure canner. I can give you more info on this is you are interested.
