Hi Rachel - welcome to HOMEGROWN! Um...what's a Chook Farmer? :) Looking forward to you sharing your stories (and photos!) with us here. Let me know if you have any questions.

Rachel,
Thanks for the chicken comment. I will try trimming her feathers and see if that helps the runny poo situation. Even when she spends the day indoors, in the cooler air, her comb is still droopy. She's also losing weight. As the lowest in the pecking order, maybe that has something to do with it.

How funny that I should read this post today, when I had my first butchering experience. I didn't do it myself (just because of time and not having the proper tools, etc.) but Brutus the Buckeye rooster went to the butcher this morning. No answer to craigslist ads or local online chicken club pleas, and after getting louder and louder and more aggressive, I finally decided it had to be done. I just hope he tastes good! :) I appreciate your blog that points out a lot of the thought that goes into eating named animals raised in your yard--some folks think I'm crazy.

My First Butcher

I blogged about my experience with our first butcher on my blog... HERE.

Excerpt:

...I guess one of the biggest things when you're raising your own food is that you can't just keep a bunch of animals around just because you gave

them a name. Eventually, hens get too old to lay eggs. There just isn't

enough room in the world for all the extra animals that don't fit into a

food… Continue
