We Are Not Alone. Do You See Yourself Here?

Wonder why we need a sustainability hub here? I’m sure we’re just an example of what happens all over the country, but meet some of our people.  Because this was my idea, I didn’t have time to ask for permissions, so I have fictionalized the names, only.

Know anyone with food allergies?  Debbie has a goat dairy in town about 20 miles away, and she has an awesome recipe for a special ice cream that many people with food allergies CAN eat. But she doesn’t have the money…

Help Make Local Foods More Available in Central New England - Please!

Our Big Chance!  Help us buy this foreclosed riding stable so that we can create a shared use facility called North Country Sustainability Center, Inc.  Please visit the following website and contribute to our NCSC Jigsaw Campaign. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 2010.  We have been leasing a facility to start our programming, but the real needs are for a community commercial, micro-creamery, and gardens for education and community. Our users are a diverse lot, but we looked at…

Everything Old Is New Again

We’ve been telling the story of North Country Sustainability Center for nearly two years. Finally we put it in a YouTube storybook.  Check it out, please.

NCSC, as we call it, is a innovative incubator that builds communities by  allowing the development of the skills that have long been there.  Traditional skills such as carpentry, sewing, cooking and farming are being…

What if "Out of the Box" Is Just Finding What Fell Through the Cracks?

It’s so frustrating to see so many stories about people feeling hopeless, homes being lost, and buildings being vandalized.  The media, the people, and even the government calling for ways to make things better, and yet we sit. Here we have an idea that can light a candle for many people, locally and nationally, but it’s not “out of the box enough,” and too small scale for others to consider.

What if “outside of the box,” is not what hasn’t been invented yet, but those things we let…

New Home, Next Step

North Country Sustainability Center, Inc. just agreed to lease a retired elementary school in Ashburnham, MA as our temporary home base. This will allow us to start offering programs, make local food and art pieces available for sale, and build the long term goal of creating a very exciting project.

What does NCSC do for anyone else?  Well, to start with, we're a regional operation, so we are open to working with and helping anyone who has a dream to start a small business that…

Are Dreams Dead? I Hope Not!

With the news all full of frustration and anger, is it possible that a dream can still come true?

I hope so, because we have a unique chance to make it happen. But it will take a little help from a lot of people.

Since I started in the field of local food and environmental education I had an image of  reusing an old building to create a place where farms could sell their food, consumers could purchase high quality locally grown food and a…

NAIS is Back

Today the USDA announced its new program for Animal Disease Traceability, which looks and sounds an awful lot like NAIS, the National Animal Identification System. It was announced through the Federal Registry today, with a 90 day comment period. Please read this announcement from Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance and other groups, about how they feel about this new program.

"Consumers and Independent Producers Lose if Big Ag Wins on Animal…

NCSC is Official!

The North Country Sustainability Center, Inc. based in Ashburnham, MA was officially notified that we have been granted our 501c3 non profit status by the IRS!  Now we can start raising the money to purchase the old riding stable and furniture factory to build our sustainability center.

Lots of people thing this project is about "greening" the region, and to some aspect it is. I had a little girl tell me this spring that sustainability means "what we have to do to stay here."  I…

Food Safety Bill Coming to a Senate Near You

The US Senate is due to vote on SB510 in the next few weeks. This bill is similar to one that has already passed in the House of Representatives. But it has many of us involved in local food and small farms worried about its contents. The following is a letter that organizations can sign on to, if they'd like. If you as an individual want to voice your opinion, please contact your own Senate or House Representative and voice those concerns… Continue
