Starting rosemary seeds and cheap grow-light set-up

Cross-post from my blog, domestic efforts:

This is my first year growing seeds indoors. I was tempted to begin this new venture with an elaborate set-up but decided to starts slowly and cheaply. That way, if my plants fail, I won't be quite so upset.

I purchased a shop light and 2 fluorescent light tubes (1 warm and 1 cool). I also bought adjustable shelving, leaving the top of the unit shelf-less so the shop…

Vegetable stock that's deep and rich

Cross-post from my blog, domestic efforts:

Since my last post about veggie stock, I've perfected my technique quite a bit. Although I never make it quite the same way twice, I do follow a few consistent…

Butternut Squash Gnocchi

Crosspost from my blog, domestic efforts:

I've never made gnocchi, but when I saw a link to a Butternut Squash Gnocchi with Sage Brown Butter recipe on What Julia…

Creamy leek and potato soup

From my blog, domestic efforts:

This year, I decided to take full advantage of the rich urban agriculture of Philadelphia and signed up for the winter CSA run by Greensgrow Farm. Not so long ago, I began focusing increasingly on local, seasonal food, and CSAs are a great tool that force you to think about how and what you cook. Traditionally, I would start with a recipe and then run to the… Continue

Vegan chili

Cross-post from my blog, domestic efforts.

My husband recently combined a bunch of online recipes to make a really amazing chili. It's pretty easy to make and incorporated several of my preserving projects, which is an added bonus. We utilized a pressure cooker to cook the beans, but you can certainly cook them the old fashioned way. You can also use canned beans, but why bother? With a little more effort, you'll get tastier… Continue

Community Garden update: we're getting there!

Cross post from my blog, domestic efforts.

Since starting the community garden in South Philadelphia, a lot of people have expressed interest in participating. Although a number of them have flaked out, we now have a small group of committed gardeners. Initially, it was just me and one other person. Since we both work full time, we had to do all the major work on weekends, and it was a huge job to clean up the… Continue

Drying basil in the microwave

This is a cross post from my blog, domestic efforts.

This weekend, it was time to harvest what was left of my basil, and there was quite a bit of it. Tips for preserving basil often suggest making pesto, but I'm not a huge fan of the stuff. I decided instead to experiment with drying, since I use dried basil quite a bit in soups and stews. Since I don't yet own a dehydrator, I took a shot at drying the leaves in the microwave.… Continue

What I learned about container gardening thus far

This is a cross-posting from my blog

The growing season for most fruits and veggies is almost over, and I learned quite a bit from my first venture into container gardening. Here's the rundown:

  • Don't overcrowd your container. -- I got overly ambitious with some containers. For example, I tried to plant 6 bush bean plants in a single 18" container, and, as a result, all I got were a few limp, tiny beans. Next time, I'll…

Starting a community garden

I'm documenting how I and another South Philadelphia resident have banded together to start a community garden in an abandoned city lot. The latest post from my blog is below, but you can also read the genesis of the project here and here.

We got up early today to pick up compost and to purchase… Continue

Cucumber salad - a few ingredients make a tasty appetizer

Originally posted on my blog

In Polish meals, you don't really see the huge green salad full of veggies so popular in the States. Salads (or "salatkas" - little salads) often comprise just two to three vegetables covered with a dressing of some sort. And in my family, we ate them with, rather than before, a meal. One of my favorites has always been "mizerja," which is a simple cucumber salad. My mom added… Continue

homemade, small batch ketchup

I just posted this recipe on my blog. How to make ketchup when you don't have 20 lbs of tomatoes.

Tomatoes are everywhere right now, and I'm loving it. I've been canning them for the past few weeks. Whole tomatoes. Crushed tomatoes. Salsas. I'll post more about some of these later.

For this post, I want to focus on… Continue

Making vegetable stock

I bought a pressure canner recently - a 16 qt Presto, for which I also purchased a weighted regulator. I was all kinds of excited to use it to can vegetable stock but things didn't turn out so easily -- at first.

I started with the Ball Blue Book's recipe for vegetable stock and dutifully diced my onions, carrots, etc. and added spices. After throwing everything in a pot, I gracefully managed to knock the entire pot to the…

Farmer's cheese - it's so easy

I'm new to Homegrown and so excited to have found this online community. I might as well jump right in!

I'm still new to cooking from scratch, and I can't believe how pleasurable and easy it can be. I feel like a schmuck for having eaten so poorly for so much of my life. The post below is just taken from my blog):

Most Polish families are likely familiar with farmer's cheese, a mild and soft cheese that resembles ricotta or… Continue
