Farmacology - a Book Review; and a Contest too!

Several months ago William Morrow / Harper Collins asked me if I would review a new book for them. Took me a few months to finally get pen to paper, so to speak. I put out the review today. This book really inspires me to continue in my new project with permaculture + cuisine = permacuisine! My new focus on creating sustainable permanent agriculture with a focus on cuisine. Melding my two favorite interests farming and cooking!

You seem to have the same focus as we do. We want to create sustainable community farms to help feed the poor and needy in our country. Any interest in working with other organizations to make a bigger impact toward the same goals?

Hi, CCR. Just curious: Could you share one takeaway from the book that HOMEGROWN types can institute in their lives/kitchens/gardens today?

Hello Jennifer,

One of the tips from the book that could be a "life changing" event for some folks would be to get closer to the healthy soil around you, especially for young children. So many of the allergies found in children today are a result of them being taken out of the environments around them and around their homes and where they live.  In recent years the notion of an "antiseptic" lifestyle leading to a healthier life might not be so accurate. As humans we need to be exposed to certain organisms and such that make up the soil and environments around us.  Let your kids play in the dirt, let them get a little dirty and play in the yards more, and don't be so afraid of normal "germs".  Also, a great garden starts with healthy soil, you cannot expect to grow healthy vegetables without a healthy soil.

Hello Travis,

Throughout my culinary career I have always donated both time and resources to the needy, homeless, and hungry.  One organization in my hometown of New Orleans known as the "New Orleans Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness" (NOAAHH) which includes many notables in the local music industry such as the Neville Brothers, also attract nationally known musicians and organize several fund raising events to generate money for the cause. The local chefs associate has a group of us that would obtain donations of food, supplies, and labor for preparing meals at these events as well as for other things like the Thanksgiving Dinner for the homeless each holiday season at the Convention Center where thousands of needy people would sit down for a wonderful free meal.
