What do I put here? Not sure.
I guess I'll start with myself. I'm 42 years old and am a retired, 20 year veteran of the U.S. Navy. I'm married to a wonderful lady and have 3 teenaged children.
We are currently living with my in-laws (not a good situation) and are searching for a piece of land near the Pennsylvania Blue Ridge Mountains to start a small farm.
We live just outside of Philadelphia. Lots of crime here and even though we live in the suburbs, crime is weaving it's way in our direction. Last November, we got held up at gunpoint not 3 blocks from our house. You know, I've been sent to hell holes all over the globe and never had a gun pointed at me. I come home to America and find myself looking at a 15 year old boy, in $80 sneakers and a cell phone pointing a .9mm in my face.
I think I've had it with city life. I've had it with sirens at night and lines at the grocery store.
My wife and I are trying to become more self-sufficient and are finding it a hard go. You'd be surprised how dependent you become on things in the city. We have a very small garden which produced our very first vegetables just last week. It was nice to eat something we grew completely on our own. It gives you a sense of satisfaction.
My wife and I walk a nearby wooded park and we are always struck by the number of animals we see. On our walks, we've seen deer, fox, rabbits, squirrels, ducks, geese, hawks, owls and finches. What we find funny is how many of our neighbors go on those same walks yet swear that they don't see a thing.
My wife and I are both outdoorsy types. We enjoy camping, hiking and fishing. We find peace outdoors.
We are going camping the week after next in the Blue Ridge Mountains and are going to check out the real estate in the area.
Hopefully, our hunting will be successful.
