Celebrate the culture of agriculture & share skills (Growing! Cooking! Eating!)

Hello all you homesteaders out there. We finally finished our rabbit barn here at Stinnett Farms. Actually, we finished the first 16 foot section. We plan to add at least two more sections. I will have a few posts coming up soon about the new barn. I also have a video coming soon about how to install an automatic rabbit watering system for a really good price.

Today I wanted to share with you how to build your rabbits some awesome next boxes. I searched the internet to find patterns and things to learn how to build them and I want to tell you about a website called The Nature Trail. If you click one of The Nature Trail links it will take you directly to the website I used to create my nest boxes.

On the website you will find a pattern that tells you how to cut enough pieces out of one sheet of plywood to make ten nest boxes. This photo shows you the pieces it takes to make one box from these cuts. The first step is to cut out all the pieces. The two bottom pieces in the photo to the left are the sides. The small piece in the middle is the front. And, the two pieced on top or the top and back of the nest box. The nest doesnt have a bottom so that urine and soiled hay can fall through the wire below.

This really is a super easy project. The plywood cost me right at $25 bucks at Home Depot. That made each box equal out to $2.50. I have seen pretty much the same boxes sale in stores for over $20 each. We built our boxes and put them in two of our expecting holland lop cages and they both went to work getting ready for their new arrivals. You can see the little hole in the hay that the rabbit made to have her babies in. Expect a post in the next few days with pictures of the new babies!!! We are super excited!!

It took me about an hour to get the pieces cut and put together all ten of the boxes. It would  have taken a little longer but my wife came and helped hold the pieces while I screwed them together. Check out The Nature Trailto learn all about the layout and dimensions for these nest boxes.

I wanted to share this with you and hope that it helps you as much as it helped me.
