Start with digging around the tree log with a mattock. Your goal is to loosen the soil
When the soil is loose enough, you are ready to dig it away with the shovel so that you can see the roots below the ground
Now you are seeing the upper roots of the tree. With the pruning saw, cut off the smaller roots
With the axe, cut off the thicker roots
When the top layer of roots has been cut out, you can reach to the smaller roots beneath the tree trunk. With the axe and the saw cut off the lowe roots
Tilt the stump back and forth until you can easily pull it off the ground
