We're four retired women, 2 are retired cops, 2 are related, one is called "Mom", and she has adopted all of us. Three are from an island in Lake Erie (Put-In-Bay), and one is from Oregon.
We all live together in a good-sized house in the middle of the desert in SW Utah on 10 acres of tumbleweed and sand.
Over the past 7 years, we've been building our soil on about .1 acre and now have a Certified Organic Status. It's not something we were pursuing, until we successfully got a NRCS EQIP grant to build two hoop houses over most of the garden.
We also have sheep. Their lambs go to folks who truly appreciate alfalfa-fed animals, and understand the love it takes to raise them.
The goats are a new addition, and will be used to make cheese (still another new project). I fell into cheese making. I consider it a gift from God that I have the patience to make awesome cheese.
We also have rabbits for meat, and chickens for eggs.
Sometime in the next two years, a couple of us are going to become Master Gardeners by terms of the same grant that caused us to Become CO.
For markets, we support two Farmer's Markets in Cedar City, Utah, and also have private customers, who purchase our custom raised meat.
Hey, gals! Welcome! And thanks for sharing a bit about yourselves! I love how your path on your land has developed organically, to use the word in a slightly different sense. And it sounds like there are even more good things to come. If you haven't found her already, you might give Dyan, one of the HOMEGROWN Life bloggers, a read—and/or a yell. She's a goat farmer and cheesemaker in Maine, and she writes beautifully about her hard work. You can find her most recent post here. Please keep us posted on the Master Gardener process and all things 4CG.
OK, when does someone create a TV show or movie about you gals??
Thanks for the warm welcome. We've talked about the reality show idea, but have never pursued it. Not sure how it would go over with our neighbors as most folks live out because they want to be left alone. I gotta tell you that we've kind of shaken up the status quo.
We're not Mormons, and this is serious Mormon country.
The idea of 4 women living together without any men is certainly suspect, until they got to know us.
We don't care who you are, as long as you're nice, we'll work with you.
The other night, we were in Enterprise for dinner at Marv's (local hamburger joint), and a guy came in looking for us, just because he saw our truck with our farm sign that says "Four Country Gals." Funny thing is that we're rarely all together as someone normally stays home to babysit the dogs.
