When I was working outside the home, you could set a clock by my sleep
schedule.  To bed at 10 pm and up at 4 am.  Every weekday, for many,
many years.  

Since I became a stay-at-home farm wife some four years ago, however -- the time at which I go to bed, awaken, and the
amount of hours I remain asleep, no longer follows any regular pattern. 

This aggravating situation has as much to do with age, I believe, as it does
with the fact that the activities that currently fill my days generally
do not fit into a predictable 9-to-5 timetable.

And weekends -- no longer hold the same meaning that they used to. The sense of relief,
the anticipation of having two full days of "me" time, that giddy
excitement of high-fiving your co-workers while counting down the last
few minutes of the work week -- is now a distant memory.


When you live and work on the farm, there are no Fridays.  No weekends. No
holidays.  There are chores to be done, projects to complete, poorly
animals to tend, fires to stoke, coops to fill, eggs to gather, bread to
bake, soap to make, snow to shovel.

I'm not complaining.  Quite the contrary.  I'm grateful for this opportunity to live my dream and 
appreciate how fortunate I am.  But there are sacrifices to be made to
enjoy a successful rural lifestyle.
