Young & Green: Jonathan on Positivity and Asian Pears

Meet Jonathan, our 19-year-old market superstar who has worked for the Learn It Grow It Eat It, Lower East Side, and Ridgewood Youthmarkets since July 2016. Hear more about Jonathan's experience at the Youthmarket, his new nickname, and his new favorite fruit below. Thank you, Jonathan!



Has the market changed what you eat? In what ways?  I started to eat more healthy foods, and started cooking with fresh vegetables instead of the ones that they sell in the supermarket.


What’s the funniest or the most interesting thing you’ve overheard at the market? A lot of the customers called me “primo” (cousin) every time they see me.

Do you cook at home? Sometimes, if I’m hungry.

What’s your favorite easy meal to make? My favorite meal to cook is spaghetti because it's fast and easy to prepare.


Do you cook for your family members? How often? I cook for my family sometimes. I cook for my aunt a lot, three times a week.


What do they think about your cooking? She always says it’s good, but I know she just says that because she wants me to continue to cook for her.


Has the market affected your future job plans? How? Yes. I’m planning on getting a job where I can help people. My experience working at the Youthmarket helped me gain people skills. 


Or school plans? How? Yes. Now I plan to work while I study in college.

 What have you learned about dealing with nasty weather (super hot or cold or rainy or windy)?learned that when it's really cold, I need to use two pairs of socks instead of one.


What about dealing with tough customers? I learned that you have to have a lot of patience.


What’s the most important question you think customers at the market should ask? I think they should all ask where the food comes from.


What’s your favorite fruit or veggie that you tried for the first time while working at the market?  I tried Asian pear for the first time while I was at the market. It was juicy and sweet.


What’s one you’re not crazy about? Grapes.


What advice would you give someone who’s thinking about working for Youthmarket? I would tell them give your best effort and stay positive.


Do you have any hobbies? Playing sports.
