Young & Green: The Best Cooking Duo... Ethan & Joseph!

THIS WEEK'S MARKET SUPERSTARS: Joseph Bautista, age 16 & Ethan Srebnick, age 17

We are thrilled to introduce Joseph and Ethan, winners of the Best Cooking Duo Award and this week's Young & Green Market Superstars! They worked hard at the Riverdale Youthmarket from July to November 2015. Congrats to them both for their great teamwork!

Has the market changed what either of you eat? In what ways?

JB: Yes, I now watch the sugar I consume daily.

ES: The market gives me easy access to fruit and vegetables, which then allows me to incorporate them into my diet more often.

Do you both cook at home?

JB: I do but rarely.

ES: Yes.

What's your favorite easy meal to make and how long does it take?

JB: I cook ratatouille, which takes about 10-15 minutes.

ES: Eggs, they about 5-10 minutes depending on the how hot the burner is.

Do you cook for your family members? What do they think about your cooking?

JB: I did once, for my parents. They thought it was really good.

ES: Sometimes. I cook for my parents about once a month. I think I am a fairly good cook.

Ethan, has working at the market affected your future job plans? How?

ES: It has exposed me to new information, which I could use for thinking about future jobs.

How about your school plans?

ES: It has exposed me to new information, which I could use for thinking about choosing a major in college.

Has the market affected how you interact with teachers or classmates in school?

JB: Not a lot, I’m very friendly.

ES: Yes, I talk to my teachers more often.


What have you learned about dealing with nasty weather (super hot or cold or rainy or windy)?

JB: Be prepared.

ES: Nothing I didn’t already know. Really just to always be ready for anything.

What about dealing with tough customers?

JB: Have patience.

ES: You need to be calm and collected, and don’t be afraid to ask your co-workers for help.

What’s the most important question you think customers at the market should ask?

JB: "Is this local?"

ES: They should ask how they can tell other people about the markets and educate them about local versus industrial farming.

What’s your favorite fruit or veggie that you tried for the first time while working at the market?

JB: Asian Pears.

ES: Squash.

What’s one you’re not crazy about?

JB: Potatoes.

ES: Arugula.

What’s the funniest or the most interesting thing you’ve overheard at the market?

ES: The most interesting thing I’ve overheard at the market was about the classes on making juice.

JB: For me, it was that yellow watermelons exist.

As seasoned pros, what advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about working for Youthmarket?

JB: Definitely do it, you'll learn a lot. It's great!

ES: Be ready for busy hours, you might have multiple customers standing around. Focus on one person at a time and make sure their order is correct before you move on to the next person.

Do you have any hobbies?

JB: Yes, I'm a student athlete. I play lacrosse.

ES: I run cross-country and track, and I wrestle.
