Parasitic (entomopathogenic) nematodes as organic pest control?

Hi guys and gals.  I'm wondering if any of my fellow Homegrown friends here have experience in using nematodes.Back story is, I've been container gardening medium large-scale with a 6x3' SIP in…Continue

Fill in the blank:
Urban Homesteader Neophyte
A bit about me:
I'm a city-liver from a white collar family. The time honoured traditions of growing and preserving have been long lost in my family, and I'm working to reclaim them so that I can eat more naturally, organically and more sustainably.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Organic roast chicken with garden sage and onions
Currently reading:
Vegan Pie in the Sky
Currently listening to:
Anja - Crazy Little Thing You Do
My latest DIY project:
I don't know how to garden, really. I'm learning as I go along. I also have no suitable yard for gardening, so I've built a sub-irrigated self-watering planter out of cedar. I've been flailing around with it, but in spite of my ignorance and difficulty finding good information on caring for plants in a true SIP like I have, it's been ridiculously successful.

Ultimate Sweet Potato Pie

It began as a joking comment about my southern heritage on Twitter: I should make a chocolate sweet potato pie. Because (self-evident). Shortly afterwards, I had people inviting themselves to my house for Thanksgiving dinner.

Bit by bit, over the course of staged bake testing, the final form came together: a fully-from-scratch (and…

5 Awesome Tricks For Working With Onions

Onions aren't a lot of fun to work with, but picked up a handful of helpful tricks over the years that help :)

1 - Tears No More!

Cut your onions on your stove under the running range hood, or chill them in the freezer for 10 minutes before slicing.

2 - Save Time (…

Roasted Banana Oat Muffins (Gluten Free)

Why roast bananas?  BECAUSE it is easy, and awesome for making explode-in-your-mouth caramelized banana goodness.  And that’s about all I have to say about that.

I didn’t set out to make these muffins gluten-free, they just turned out that way.  I wanted to experiment in baking with…

Heaven By Coconut Rolls

It’s kind of funny how some things just sort of fall together by coincidence.

I have had cinnamon rolls on the back burner in my brain for a while, but what with family matters and vacation plans, cooking and baking got tabled a bit, cause I was cleaning out the fridge and freezer (Oh joy of annual deep-freeze ice scraping!).  While I was down south, I happened to stay in a hotel that was literally right next door to Trader Joes, and while I was there, I happened to get hooked on TJ’s…

Hi, Anne. Welcome to HOMEGROWN! My name is Jennifer, and I'm the flock tender here: site updater and tweaker, feeder and waterer of content. I’m so glad you found us! (And I’ve got a good friend from Hamilton. Any chance you know a Heather Keenleyside?) I hope you’ll find plenty of projects and ideas here to spur you on, and I hope you’ll be game for sharing some of your own, too, in our member blog, The Stew. Actually, more on that: Since there is such a dearth of good info out there on SIPs, any chance you’d want to write a HOMEGROWN 101 on the subject? If so, let’s talk. (And just for the record, having built an SIP is hardly not knowing how to garden. You’re a gardening rockstar!)

Elsewhere on HOMEGROWN, you can always find the latest additions to the site at the top of the homepage, and if you’ve ever got questions, please don't hesitate to leave a comment on my profile page or shoot me a message. I hope you feel right at home!
