What kind of HOMEGROWN are you?
Earth Mama
A bit about me:
Wife, mother, grandmother. I hate grocery shopping so much, I grow/raise my own. I live on a very large farm in N. California...my husband and sons are growers of seed crops, tomatoes, rice, grain, sunflowers for oil, cotton, pecans and almonds. Some of the crops are organic and others are conventional..I have a large organic raised bed garden, free-range/ pastured chickens for eggs and meat, honeybees and currently waiting for Nigerian dairy goats. I buy my beef, pork and lamb on the hoof from local farmers living less than 5 miles from my farm. I manage The Colusa Community Garden and the Colusa Certified Farmers Market.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Fresh caught striped bass fresh caught from the Sacramento River, our own rice, steamed broccoli and artichokes from the garden, big green salad from the garden and a peach (last year's crop) cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream. Yummy!
Currently reading:
The End of Oil and The End of Food....
Currently listening to:
Classic Rock and Roll via my I-Pod Nano...couldn't garden, can, housework, laundry, live without it!
My latest DIY project:
Trying to integrate a new young laying flock with a flock of old bitchy hens...pray for me!

Lynda did you make a raised bed with cinder blocks? Really like your pictures! I have a small home stead in north east Georgia only 3.5 acres. We have 8 raised beds and a larger garden plot down in the wooded area in front of the house. Hopefully this year our garden will be bigger and produce more. I like the cinder block idea. I made compost bins from straw bales it worked out really well, so will have plenty of compost for the garden this year. Gonna try some thing new this year Golden Menegal  and Walking stick kale and Jack Bean want some thing different and new for 2012

Are those cinder blocks the ones that are sold at Home Depot and Lowe's? How many would I need to make a small raised bed 4 by 6? Gonna try it this spring really enjoyed the pictures.  Thanks  Ellen
